Original value in KB: 946358

Symptoms

  • On a domain member’s computer or laptop, the application successfully calls LsaLookupSids to resolve the security identifier (SID) to verify that you got the username.
  • User signature changed on Arena controller.
  • In this scenario, the LsaLookupSids attribute might return the old username instead of the full name of the new user. This behavior may prevent the software application from working properly.

    Reason

Local Security Pro (LSA) stores the mapping between specific usernames and sid in a local cache on the member computer with the web address. The cached user label is not synchronized with domain controllers. An LSA on a member of a custom domain first queries the local cache of the SID store. If an existing mapping is uniquely present in the local memory cache SID, the LSA returns the cached user header information together.By polling arena controllers. This behavior is intended to improve performance.

Cache entries are important for some time, but applications with persistent requests may keep a cache entry active for the maximum lifetime of a cache entry.

    Solution

To work around this issue, disable the home SID cache on the new domain member computer. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open the registry editor.

To start this type of Windows on XP or Windows on Server 2003, click Start, select Run, type regedit, and click OK.

To do this on Windows and later, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

    2. Next, locate and right-click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

    3. Hover over New, then click DWORD Value.

    4. Type LsaLookupCacheMaxSize and press Enter.

    5. Right click LsaLookupCacheMaxSize and then just click Edit.

    6. In the Value field, select 0, beyondthen click OK.

    7. Exit Registry Editor.

LSA maintains a SID cache on domain member computers. This cache stores mappings between SIDs in addition to usernames. If SID help and advice is in a local cache, LSA will return cached user reputation information instead of checking if a particular username has changed.

The local SID helps reduce the load on the domain controller and network traffic. However, there may be inconsistencies between the local cache and domain controllers.

There is a page on TechNet about SID name resolution, including a detailed description of this cache:

  • 2 minutes playback
  • The LsaLookupCacheMaxSize registry entry specifies the maximum number of cached lookups that can be stored here in the local SID cache. The maximum number of misses is 128. If the lsalookupcach registry valueemaxsize is set to help 0, local SID caching is definitely disabled.
